Unease settles in the pit of my stomach when I arrive at Aaron’s place. His truck is in the driveway, but there’s no sign of life inside the house. The front door is locked, the blinds are closed, and there’s no light coming from inside. Circling the exterior of his small house, I check the back door and find it locked up tight.

Shit.

I return to the front and try knocking again, only to stand there without hearing any sounds for another minute.

Fuck it. Time to call in a favor.

I pull my phone from my pocket and select the favorite icon for Eric’s contact. He answers on the third ring. “Codfish! It’s Sunday morning. Why are you calling me so early?”

“Hi, E. Is Sawyer around?”

“Daddy?” he sounds rightfully confused. “He’s right here. Hold on.”

There’s some shuffling and a murmured voice until Sawyer comes on. “Cody? Is everything all right?”

“Hey, Sawyer. Yeah, um, fine.”

“What’s going on?”

“Listen, I’m at Aaron’s place, and I’m calling in a favor. He bailed on breakfast, and I haven’t heard from him. Call it a welfare check.”

“Fucking asshole!” Sawyer growls. “He told me he was doing better.”

“I never said he wasn’t, but his truck is here, and he’s not answering the door. I’m…concerned.”

“He might have stayed with a hookup last night,” Sawyer muses, his tone slightly calmer than it was seconds ago.

“I was with him last night at The Garden. He didn’t leave with anyone.” No need to explain how I know the intimate details, but it’s enough truth to get Sawyer back to the urgency of why I’m calling. “Tell me how to get inside.”

“Fuck.” Sawyer sighs. “There’s a hideaway key in a fake rock. Look in the planter by the front door. Count five rocks in, three down. It looks like a piece of granite with a small green mark.”

I move away from the door and scan the area. I see the green mark and pull the rock from the ground, realizing it’s not fake. A small plastic bottle has been glued to it and stuffed into the ground. “This shit is heavy.”

Sawyer laughs while I unscrew the bottle and dump the gold key in my palm. “Well, yeah. You don’t want some cheap thing that looks fake. Kinda defeats the security aspect behind it.”

“Paranoid Marines,” I mutter.

“Says the man breaking into someone's house.”

“Are you complaining or thanking me for doing your job?”

“Don’t be a dick. I was with him the other day. Keep me posted and don’t hesitate to call if you need me.”

“Will do. Thanks, Sawyer.”

“Oh, and, Cody?”

“Yeah?”

“Prepare yourself. I’m ending the call so I can get Eric occupied in the tub if you need me.” He says it with such finality that my blood runs cold. Surely he doesn’t believe Aaron would do that, right?

“Okay.” The call ends, and I pocket the phone. My movements are slow as I return to the front door and unlock it. The knob turns, and I push silently. For a second, I stop and listen for any signs of Aaron in the house.
